Adieu, cigar smoking man

By: Rebecca Liston

The tides are changing, Dear Reader. The tides in our World. In our Work. In our Ways of Being. And I, for one, am in awe of it.

I don’t always talk about the specifics of my work, but for some reason, it seems important to do so today, so here we go…

I’ve been having the most profound experiences during my Business Intuition and Coaching sessions these last months. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was changing, what was shifting, but I knew that my work was evolving.

Recently I told Stella that I was doing the very best work of my life these days. When she asked me what had caused this next evolution of my work to occur, I wasn’t sure, exactly. It was just a feeling.

Until it hit me: I hadn’t felt Cigar-Smoking-Man around me in a really long time.

And now, just before you think I have completely gone off my rocker, allow me to explain!

You see, during Business Intuition Sessions, there are a lot of different energies at play. Typically the focus of the Intuitive is on the energy or intelligence of the Business itself, along with their Client (the owner of the business), and the Customers of the business. But sometimes other energies pop in for a bit to say their piece about whatever topic we are exploring at the time.

(Really, running a Business Intuition Session is kind of like tending bar – everyone vying for your attention, waiting their turn to shout out their piece of insight. It can be quite the production, energetically speaking, to keep track of who says what and why and not get messages confused. This is why solid training and tons of practice is required! But I digress…)

Among all the energies that I typically track in a session, there is one energy that we lovingly refer to as Cigar-Smoking-Man.

Cigar-Smoking-Man is balding. He wears a suit and tie, and his belly protrudes more than he’d like to admit over the top of his pants. He is smart. Sharp as a tack. And cuts to the chase whenever I ask him a question about business. And all the while he puffs that cigar and never takes his eagle-eyes from mine. It is all business with this man. I’ve come to know him over the 20+ years I have been doing this work and he is a force to be reckoned with. I think he also drinks too much scotch. But that’s another story.

He shows up so often in sessions with clients that they recognize his energy themselves now. Indeed he even shows up in the sessions I have with MY Business Intuitive, putting in his two cents about what’s happening in my work and my business all while puffing that cigar of his.

But here’s what I realized has been happening in recent months: He hasn’t been showing up to work!

Cigar-Smoking-Man, for the first time in 20+ years, has not been showing up even in the periphery of my energetic awareness.

And this is how I know that the tides truly are changing, Dear Reader.

Cigar-Smoking-Man, and all he represents, is gone.

And in his place?

In his place I feel what I can only call “A New Energy.”

This New Energy is respectful and matter-of-fact without being abrasive or dismissive.

She is street-smart. And wise. (Two very different things).

She is sincere and compassionate. Nurturing, but not enabling. And she knows how to ever-so-gently but ever-so-importantly get to the heart of the matter without fail.

She also pauses a lot as she speaks, taking time to gather her thoughts and her ideas and reflections before sharing them, and giving others space to do the same.

It is more than “all business” with her.

It seems that she is, quite simply, more whole.

And while I love that she is bringing her gifts to my Work, I love even more that she is bringing these gifts to the entire World.

Space to pause. To reflect. To consider. To mull. To ponder.

To Be.

And oh, how much richer we shall all be for it.
