Hello, friend —
People show me their notebooks.
In the last few weeks, I’ve had the good fortune to be on several calls where someone is telling me about what they are working on, and then they hold up a notebook.
This delights me!
It has a feeling of solidarity, because I’m a notebook person, too.
The holding up of a notebook strikes me as both revelation and recognition.
There’s something about revealing ourselves as people who talk to ourselves (or draw to ourselves or paint to ourselves) in notebooks.
And there is also something to recognizing when we cross paths with another one of us.
I’m not sure exactly why, but I continue to be amazed each time I discover that there is another person with a practice of writing to themselves in their notebook, too.
To me, writing is like a beating heart. Or digestion. I wouldn’t be alive without it!
And so every time I come across a notebook person, it has a whiff of specialness about it.
Like spotting a koala or something.
So, cheers to you, my notebook people!
What a strange and wonderful practice we’ve got going on.
Stella
P.S. I recently sat down with Heather Fisher-Page to talk about writing and telling stories on her podcast. If you’re in a listening mood, she is a delight and I talk a bit about what we do when we write and how “words create worlds”:

She was originally trained as a teacher in the traditional classroom model who “left the walls behind” to become an experiential educator and outdoor adventure guide. She’s at her best in conversations that have this same sense of freedom, aliveness, curiosity, and adventure – even and especially when they’re about business.
