The business of becoming

By: Rebecca Liston

Becoming.

Hat tip to Michelle Obama. It’s a delicious title, and a glorious read. Kinda like sitting down to coffee with a friend.

Becoming.

The word has been fleeting through my brain and consciousness frequently for the last couple of years.

Becoming.

I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to talk about the phenomenon I have witnessed in each of our clients as we work with them.

Becoming.

Were they “in transition?” Were they “up-leveling?” Just what, exactly, was going on?

Becoming.

And what about me? What was happening for me as I pursued my own right work in such deeper, more profound ways?

Becoming.

And then there’s my kid. Fourteen tomorrow. W.T.A.F. How did that happen?!?

Becoming.

Watching my business partners step up into leadership and ownership of themselves and their lives in new and exciting ways. How would I describe what I was seeing through my eyes in them?

Becoming.

A phone call with our web designer: “We have to push back that launch date on the xyz Project, Indy. Our client isn’t quite ready for the reveal. She’s still ‘in the goo.'” And everyone on the team knows precisely what that means.

Becoming.

“Holy crap…three years ago I had an inkling that this might happen…and now? Here. We. Are.” (Client to me on a call just yesterday).

Becoming.

My youngest. Nine years of age. Singing her first solo on the Big Stage. She never told me she had been given that delicious one refrain to sing all on her own. She wanted it to be a surprise.

Becoming.

Six years ago in a Business Intuition session I was told my business would expand to include 2 partners, and that we would model “Inclusivity,” which would vary greatly from the model we had been “brought up in” professionally. I had no idea what that meant then. But now? Livin’ it.

Becoming.

During what would be our last conversation before she died, our beloved client and friend, Meryl, said to me, “There’s something new on the horizon for me, I can feel it. I suspect there may be green grass and sunshine. And fairies. Lots and lots of fairies.” And I asked: ” Do you think that perhaps working with these fairies is part of your Legacy Work, Meryl?” And she replied, with that mischievous and knowing glint in her eye, “Well, I certainly hope so!”

Becoming.

Not only What We Do, but How We Do It. Perhaps, even, Who We Are???

Becoming.

That phenomenon I witness, time and time again. Seventeen years of serving and supporting clients and that just never gets old.

Becoming.

I see you. You’re doing it, too.

Becoming.

I am so glad we’re doing it, together.
