“Where have you been all my life?!?”
These words from my newest coaching client after our very first call.
Is it okay to admit to you, Dear Reader, that it made me weep to read them?
I suspect you all know by now just how very much I love my work.
Years ago, I did a series of talks entitled, aptly, “For The Love of The Work.” In them, I supported attendees to really look at their Work in the World with a new set of eyes. Eyes that held within them the deepest Love imaginable.
I believe that when we gaze upon our Work with this look of Love, we can truly witness it for what it is: Brilliant! Frustrating. Exciting! Mind-boggling. Full of Ease! Strenuous. Enchanting! Disenchanting. Fulfilling! Draining. All of that to say: it is Perfectly Imperfect.
Our Work is Perfectly Imperfect…always shifting, changing, growing, evolving just as we are. And it is, I believe, our sheer Love for it that allows its evolution to be possible.
And dare I say that I believe that the evolution of our Work ripples out to the Work of those with whom we are in cahoots?
If I gaze upon my Work with true Love and Admiration, and if, because of this, my Work evolves in such ways that my clients wonder where I have been all of their lives, then could it not be supposed that my clients will then gaze upon their own Work with deeper Love as a result of our Work together?
And then could it not be supposed that, because they are gazing upon their own Work with a deeper Love than ever before, that their Work will in turn evolve in such ways that their clients will wonder where they’ve been all of their lives?
I suspect you see where I am going here…
The Love of the Work, Dear Reader, is what drives me.
In turn, it drives my clients’ Love of their own Work.
Which, in turn, drives their clients’ Love of their own Work. And so on, and so on.
And I can’t help but wonder, Dear Reader: When we do the Work we do for the sheer Love of it, what else is possible?
We have a saying ‘round these parts that money is not the most interesting thing.
But rarely do we say what we feel IS the most interesting thing.
So today I will I will tell you what it is for me:
I do everything I do for the sheer Love of the Work. For the deep, deep Pleasure of being of Service. For the awe-inspiring Gift of bearing witness to the Greatness of those I am blessed to Serve.
And my wish for you is to feel the same sheer Love of your own Work…today and always.
