Your business is about more than just dollars and cents. It’s about more than providing great service. More than “doing work.” More than “gettin’ ‘er done.” More than that system you developed or that program you launched or that testimonial you just have to get up on your website, pronto.
Your business is about so much more than that.
It is also about YOU.
Your self-awareness. Your growth. Your Be-ing in the world.
And sometimes – I would argue all times, really – we need to ensure that we are taking care of US in the midst of all that is The Running of a Business.
And what better way than to do so than to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and write???
For many of us, when we think about writing for our company, we think about writing web copy, email campaigns, social media posts. Always with an eye on ‘how can my writing compel people to hire me?’ So we take copywriting courses. Many of them are fantastic.
Over the years, it has become very clear that the best marketing writing comes when the business owner knows WHO THEY ARE. Notice I didn’t say ‘knows what their business does.’ When the business owner (or person writing for the company) is clear on who they are and where they are going, that comes out organically in the copywriting and naturally draws people to them.
Writing Your Way Home is our way of helping you get grounded in yourself — so that it can’t help but come out in all your writing and communication. Like football players who take ballet to improve their game, Writing Your Way Home will improve the way you communicate with yourself, your clients, and in your marketing.
I like to say that “business is the most lucrative form of therapy.”
And one of the best ways to access all that juice is writing.
Not writing marketing, mind you.
Writing to yourself, in a journal. To get to know what’s going on inside you, and what matters to you. So that you can share that, simply and powerfully and palpably, with other people.
This is where a writing practice comes in. When people ask me how they can become a better copywriter or a better human being (or heck, how they can stop feeling so tossed about by life all the damn time), my answer is the same: write to your self – go spelunking in the caves of your meanings and narratives. Write for emotional hygiene. Write for communion with something bigger than yourself. Write to rearrange the furniture in your mind. Just write – for yourself, and no one else, for the sheer pleasure and fascination of it.
