Welcome Home

By: Rebecca Liston

As some of you know, I am a (retired) homeopath. In fact, this past month I celebrated 19 years since my graduation from the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine, the school at which I both studied, and later, taught.

I recall with complete clarity the events that unfolded in such an incredible dance of luck and fate and coincidence and magic that landed me in my seat for my very first day of classes – events that would, if I told them to you, make you think I was making them up as they were just that “strange.”

And I recall very, very clearly the exact words that sprang to my head the moment my first lecturer began speaking about the art and science of homeopathic medicine. I looked around me, and a voice came into my head and said: “Welcome home, kid. Welcome home.”

That Medicine – its tenets and philosophy and application and brilliance, its inherent marriage of art and science, its reverence for bodies and minds and souls and all the things that make us Who We Are – that Medicine is in my bones. It was there before I even stepped inside the classroom…I simply did not know it. But that moment shifted something within me, and memories flooded through me, and I swear I heard a “click” in my mind as if the final tumbler in a lock fell into place.

I had come Home.

I carry this Medicine with me everywhere, and I do not mean that I simply pack my pockets with remedies for every outing (although I do that, too!) What I mean is that the philosophy, the structure, the beliefs, and the skills I learned that are the foundation of the Medicine are the basis of all that I do in life.

And. They form the basis of all that I do in business, too:

The understanding that all “symptoms” are truly just an expression of a deeper, underlying imbalance;

The knowing that “less” truly is “more,” and that energy has a bigger impact than matter;

The belief that there are no such things as “individual parts,” but that, instead, all pieces work together to create a Whole;

The skills of listening, of being what homeopaths call “The Unprejudiced Observer;”

And the fundamental core value that we are each here to support one another in becoming the very best version of ourselves that we could ever be…

Well, each of these things inform my work in every moment, even 19 years later.

I know that many of you have lifetimes of knowledge and wisdom that you, too, carry in your bones. And I have had the pleasure of witnessing some of you bring that forth into your work and your lives.

It’s the former police officer’s attention to minute detail that now makes her the natural choice to be a proof-reader.

It’s the former teacher’s ability to captivate a classroom that now makes him a natural at hosting seminars and events.

It’s the medical doctor’s deep understanding of ‘what can go wrong’ that makes them perfect at having conversations with folks about, well, precisely what CAN go wrong…and how to prepare for it.

We are, I believe, essentially just like turtles: We carry our “Homes” on our backs. And those Homes are filled with all that we know and all that we’ve learned and all that we hold dear. And it becomes what many like to call our “secret sauce,” or our “unique selling proposition,” but what I always refer to in my own mind as our “Medicine.”

You, Dear Reader, are uniquely you – truly a wonder to behold. You carry the energy of all that you’ve studied, all that you’ve achieved, all that you’ve done. Every book you’ve read. Every story you’ve told. Every thought you’ve ever ‘thunk.’

I see you, Dear Reader. I. See. You.

And I am oh-so-glad you’re here.

Big love,
